More Snow!

At 9 o'clock, the sidewalk had already been plowed ... and snowed over again.

Omaha schools are closed for the holiday break. This means today's snow event (officially known as "Snowmageddon" or the "Snowpocalypse") is not as significant for students. It has already made its mark, though, with shoppers clamoring for bread and milk at the grocery stores Sunday, in anticipation of a forecast that called for at least eight inches of snow.

But Omahans woke up to scaled-back predictions of four to six inches of "dry" snow. But combined with strong winds, it is still going to make for difficult driving conditions and more shoveling and plowing on the heels of last Thursday's Christmas Eve snowfall.

It is always a nice surprise when you wake up to snow that was not expected. That was precisely the situation on Christmas Eve here in Omaha.

Almost as bizarre? A strange flash of light that occurred about six hours before the first flakes began falling.

By 9 a.m., there was already an inch. And up to six more were still to come.

Off To Spain

Only two days after returning from Utah, I am back on the road again. This time, Spain is my destination. Omaha mired in sub-freezing temperatures, so it's a good time to get away.

More Snow?

Olivia and Emily showed me what the front door looked like. Wow.

 So it's snowing again in Omaha today. And if it keeps up, there won't be school tomorrow. Strong winds and really heavy, wet snow don't make for great driving conditions. It was kind of fun to see the snow from afar, but not so nice (in Nice, no less) to know I'll be traveling back to it.

FaceTime froze like this for about 30 seconds when I was talking to Bridget.

First Race Trip Of 2013

I'm (hopefully) leaving the snowflakes behind today as I fly to Minneapolis, then on to Paris-Nice.

Now That's Service!

This was a welcome sight – that came with a surprise.

So you've seen the video of the girls and Bridget shoveling the street. That was Friday. The storm came Thursday afternoon and by Friday morning, snow plows were clearing streets all over town. Except for our neighborhood. Saturday came and went, too, with no plow.

I talked to Bridget, who said she had called the city twice and emailed once. So after church, I jumped online to email my city councilman, Garry Gernandt. I expected this might get some action sometime Monday. Well, hopefully.

Three hours later, a heard the roar of a truck and looked outside. There was a plow – finally – doing its thing in the circle. I immediately sent a text to Bridget to let her know the good news. She encouraged me to thank him, so I used the opportunity to take out my garbage. Little did I know what a surprise I was in for. When I got close enough to say hello and thank him, I realized it was ... Garry Gernandt!

Not only has Garry received my vote for city council in the past, but he's got it for as long as he wants to keep being my city councilman. Thanks, Garry!

The Omaha Snow Storm That Wasn't

I made quick work of the driveway.

After much talk about an 18- to 24-inch snowstorm for Omaha all week, I woke up to about 7.5 inches of snowfall that was powdery, which is great for snow blowing. A little after 8 a.m., I got to work snowblowing. When I got inside a bit after 10 a.m. and looked at my phone, I realized I missed an interview call. Oops. Thankfully, I was able to quickly reschedule. Now the snow is melting fast. Supposedly, two more storms are on their way next week. We'll see.
