Omaha In The Spotlight

The front page of this morning's Omaha World-Herald.

I was going to write a review of the TV coverage of the shooting at Millard South High School. But 1) I don't have time; and, 2) I'm not getting paid to do it.

But here's the short of it: KETV kicked everyone's butt the first hour. KMTV put anchor Craig Nigrelli on the scene (a great move), which made the station's coverage in the first hour seem all the more awful and WOWT lagged behind, despite the valiant efforts of Millard South graduate Jodi Baker.

Some memorable moments:
  • KMTV's picture went black during the first live press conference.
  • KETV read text messages of students to their parents, which created all kinds of confusion since the students were reporting on what they heard on TV, rather than what was going on inside the school.
  • KMTV photojournalist Rich Watson did a live phone report. (Go Rich!)
  • KPTM had no live coverage and only acknowledged the shooting on its website three hours after it happened.
  • CNN put a graphic up that read, "Mallard."
